Game Night Riddles: 30 Riddles for Family Game Night

30 riddles Β· tap Hint or Answer to reveal

Family game night is about more than winning. It’s the snacks, the silly arguments over the rules, the cousin who always wants to be the banker, and the moment someone rolls exactly the number they needed. Before the box even opens, a round of riddles is the perfect warm-up.

These 30 game night riddles are all about the things you find on the game table: dice, decks of cards, chess and checkers pieces, dominoes, timers and puzzles, plus a few games you can play with nothing at all. The easy round works for young players, the medium round tests what you know about the pieces, and the tricky round is for the family champions. At the end, there’s a plan for turning the riddles into a game of their own.

How to Run a Game Night Riddle Round

  1. Start with a riddle warm-up. Before the first game, read the easy round. Every riddle a player solves earns them one token, button or candy.
  2. Use the tokens as a bonus. Players can spend a token during the night for an extra roll, a redraw or a β€œskip my turn” pass in whatever game you’re playing.
  3. Make it a team quiz. Split the family into teams. Flip the hourglass or start a one-minute timer for each riddle. A correct answer without the hint scores 2 points, with the hint 1 point, and the scorekeeper writes it all on the scorecard.
  4. Act it out. For a few riddles, the reader has to act out the clue charades-style instead of reading it aloud.
  5. Save the tricky round for dessert. Read it between games, while everyone is snacking. The family member with the most points gets to pick the next game.
