When winter comes, food gets scarce and the days turn cold, so animals need a plan. Some sleep through it in a deep, slowed-down state called hibernation. Some fly or walk thousands of miles to somewhere warmer. Others stay awake and get clever: they store food, grow thicker coats or huddle together for warmth.
These 30 hibernation riddles cover all of those plans. The easy round is about the sleepers and travelers kids already know, the medium round brings in words like torpor and brumation, and the tricky round has the wildest winter facts, like a frog that freezes solid and wakes up in spring. Every fact in the answers is true.

Hibernation Riddle Games
- Sleep, fly or stay? Make three signs: a pillow (hibernate), a bird (migrate) and a mitten (stay awake). After each animal riddle, kids run to the sign that matches that animalβs winter plan.
- Hibernation freeze: everyone moves around like a busy animal. When the reader says βwinter!β, they curl up and freeze until the next riddle is solved. The first to answer βwakes upβ and reads the next one.
- Classroom chart: after the medium and tricky rounds, make a chart with columns for hibernation, torpor, brumation, migration and staying active, and sort every animal in the list.
- Den builder: give each team a sheet, pillows or a cardboard box to build a winter den. They earn a βfall snackβ (a cracker or a raisin) for every riddle they answer before winter comes.
