βWhat am I?β riddles are the perfect first riddles. Each one gives two or three simple clues about something a young child already knows (how it looks, what sound it makes, where you find it) and lets them put the picture together. Every answer here is something you can point to, draw, or find in a picture book, so even kids who canβt read yet can play along.
These 30 What Am I riddles for kids are written for ages 4 to 7. Read them aloud slowly, and pause after each clue. If your child is stuck, the hint adds one more easy clue. Start with the animals, which are the easiest, and work up to the last round, where kids have to think about two clues at once.

Make It a Game
- Draw the answer: read a riddle aloud and let kids draw what they think it is before anyone says the answer. Little ones who canβt spell yet can still play, and the drawings are half the fun.
- Point and find: for the βaround the houseβ round, kids race to touch the answer (a spoon, a cup, a door) instead of saying it.
- Classroom circle time: give each child a picture card with one of the answers. Read the riddle, and the child holding the matching card stands up and shows it.
- Make your own: help your child pick a favorite toy or animal and say three clues about it. Itβs a great way to practice describing words.
