Kindergarteners love riddles, as long as they are short, use words they know and point to things they have actually seen. Every riddle here is two or three simple sentences about an animal, an everyday object or something outside the window, so a 4, 5 or 6-year-old can picture the answer while you read.
Read each riddle slowly, pause, and let your child guess. If they get stuck, read the hint. Wrong guesses are part of the fun: ask βWhy do you think that?β and youβll often hear some great reasoning. The last section has a few βtrickyβ riddles that play with words, a good stretch for kids who are ready for more.

Make It a Game
- Guess and draw: read a riddle, then everyone draws their guess before the answer is revealed. Compare pictures. Itβs great for kids who are still shy about saying answers out loud.
- Act it out: after the answer, everyone acts it out: hop like a kangaroo, roar like a lion, move slowly like a snail.
- Circle time riddle: read one riddle a day at circle time. Once kids know how it works, let a child make up a riddle about something in the classroom for everyone else to guess.
- Picture cards: for the youngest kids, lay out three picture cards (for example cow, duck and lion) and let them point to the answer.
