Grammar has a reputation for being dull, but every rule hides a little puzzle. A comma can save someoneβs life, one goose becomes two geese but one moose stays one moose, and three words that sound exactly alike can mean three different things. Turn those rules into riddles and kids start hunting for them on their own.
These 30 grammar riddles are written for classrooms from about grade 3 to grade 8. The easy round covers the basic parts of speech and punctuation marks, the medium round adds pronouns, contractions and homophones, and the tricky round has irregular verbs, sneaky plurals and sentences that change meaning. Every answer explains the rule.

Using Grammar Riddles in the Classroom
- Warm-up riddle: write one riddle on the board as students come in. The first correct answer earns the right to read tomorrowβs.
- Parts-of-speech sort: read the easy and medium riddles aloud and have students hold up a card: N for noun, V for verb, ADJ, ADV, and so on. Itβs a quick check of who has the terms down.
- Fix the sentence: for the tricky round, ask students to write the correct sentence on a whiteboard, not just say the answer. βSwamβ and βswumβ stick better when kids write them in context.
- Write your own: after the homophone riddles, challenge students to write one riddle using a homophone pair (pair and pear, flower and flour, knight and night). Swap with a partner and solve.
