Anagram Puzzles: 30 Letter Scrambles with Answers

30 riddles Β· tap Hint or Answer to reveal

An anagram is a word or phrase made by shuffling the letters of another one. Every letter has to be used, and each one only once. HEART becomes EARTH, LISTEN becomes SILENT, and the best anagrams seem to know what they’re about: rearrange DORMITORY and you get DIRTY ROOM.

These 30 anagram puzzles give you the scrambled word and a clue to what the new word means. The easy round uses short words that kids can solve by moving two or three letters, the medium round has longer words, and the tricky round turns words into whole phrases. Grab a pencil, or cut the letters out of paper and shuffle them on the table. Every answer has been checked letter for letter.

How to Play Anagram Games

  • Letter tiles: write each letter of the starting word on a small square of paper. Kids can slide the tiles around until the new word appears. It’s much easier than solving in your head, and it makes it obvious that no letter is left over.
  • Beat the timer: read the easy round aloud and give each player 30 seconds per puzzle. For the tricky round, allow two minutes and let teams work together.
  • Classroom word work: anagrams are a sneaky spelling lesson. Ask students to find a second anagram for STOP (there are several, like POTS and TOPS) or for LISTEN (try ENLIST and TINSEL).
  • Make your own: challenge older kids to find an anagram that fits its meaning, the way DORMITORY becomes DIRTY ROOM. Then trade puzzles with a friend.
