Fairy tales have been told for hundreds of years, long before there were movies. Many of the versions we know were written down by Charles Perrault in France in the 1690s, by the Brothers Grimm in Germany in the 1800s, and by Hans Christian Andersen in Denmark, while others, like Jack and the Beanstalk, come from old English folk tales. The old stories are full of small, memorable details: a slipper, a spindle, a single pea.
These 30 fairy tale riddles are all about those details, taken from the traditional stories. The easy round covers the tales most kids know by heart, the medium round digs into the characters and objects, and the tricky round has details from the older versions that might surprise you. Get ready for βonce upon a time.β

Fairy Tale Riddle Games
- Which story? After each answer, ask kids to name the fairy tale it comes from. Two points for the answer, one point for the story.
- Story starter: pick one riddle answer (a pea, a spindle, a golden ball) and have kids tell a brand-new fairy tale that uses it, starting with βOnce upon a time.β
- Old vs.Β new: the tricky round shows how stories change over time. Read a picture-book version of Cinderella or Goldilocks, then compare it with the old details from the riddles.
- Dress-up guessing: at a party, one player acts out a character (Rapunzel letting down her hair, the wolf huffing and puffing) and everyone else guesses, riddle-style.
